Overseeing nursing professional development (NPD) for a staff of nurses is a huge responsibility. It’s no stretch to say the quality of staff development is directly related to the quality of nursing care patients receive.  

If you’re a clinical staff educator wondering how to best optimize your NPD efforts, there’s an organization specially geared to assist professionals like you: the Association for Nursing Professional Development.

What ANPD Offers

The Association for Nursing Professional Development has been around for 25 years, most of them under a different name—the National Nursing Staff Development Organization. In 2012 the organization updated its scope and standards to shift away from the term “nursing staff development” toward an expanded “nursing professional development” and, subsequently, opted to change its name.

Language subtleties aside, the group continues to be a rock of support for NPD professionals nationwide. For about $125 (groups, military personnel and professionals who are retired pay a little less), members receive:

  • Community, via an online discussion forum that allows NPD educators across the country to ask questions and offer input on everything NPD-related, and the bimonthly TrendLines e-newsletter. (You’re not alone!)
  • Education, via the group’s bimonthly Journal for Nurses in Staff Development, free access to the CE Direct catalog of libraries, and discounts on webinars addressing hot topics in NPD and ANPD books, including the comprehensive reference guide Core Curriculum for Nursing Professional Development, 4th Edition.
  • Community and Education, via discounted registration to the ANPD annual convention, which just this month drew almost 1,000 NPD professionals and leaders to Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, FL, to bask in the presence of top-notch education, exhibits, networking opportunities and, just maybe, a Disney princess or two.

Keeping it Local

To date, ANPD has more than 40 affiliates, local groups of NPD nurses that often offer NPD certification prep courses and further networking opportunities.  ANPD members also score discounts on certification and recertification fees for NPD through the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Attention Aspiring NPD Educators

Not a clinical staff educator but want to be? You can benefit from ANPD, too.

In addition to the education and networking opportunities  already touched on, you can glean from-the-beginning support and how-to advice through the online course “Getting Started in Staff Education: A Key to Nursing Professional Development,” which is discounted for ANPD members. Offered several times annually, the course teaches NPD newbies how to assess their staff’s clinical education needs and make a plan to meet them.

"It was almost like having a support group in which you learned from one another and also got reassurance that others were experiencing the same things," said one past participant. Another lamented, "I only wish I had known about this course earlier in my NPD career."
