Nurse leaders who attend this year’s Nursing Management Congress will have great odds of hitting the jackpot — even if they decide not to take a chance on the slots. Slated for Nov. 6-10 at The Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas, the 5-day conference is packed full of so many evidence-based sessions, quality speakers, and professional networking opportunities that every nurse who goes is sure to leave a winner.

A handful of preconference workshops are available for a separate fee Nov. 6-7. Offerings include:

  • a 2-day intensive for new nurse managers that focuses on finance and leadership,
  • a 2-day CNML and NE-BC certification prep course,
  • a day-long intensive for experienced nurse leaders,
  • a half-day workshop on how to create a positive organizational culture, and
  • a half-day workshop on improving the patient experience.

The evening of Nov. 7, the conference kicks off in earnest with opening remarks from conference chairman Jeffrey Doucette, DNP, RN, FACHE, CENP, LNHA, regional vice president of clinical services and chief nurse executive at Bon Secours Hampton Roads Health System, Newport News, VA. Dr. Doucette will talk about leadership skills necessary for the current, rapidly changing healthcare landscape. A welcome reception including posters and exhibits will follow.

First thing Nov. 8, the recipient of the Richard Hader Visionary Leader Award will be honored. Zubin Damania, MD, aka “ZDoggMD” and founder of Turntable Health in Las Vegas, will present the keynote address. His talk will use humor and storytelling to focus on collaborative ways to revitalize a healthcare system he considers “severely dysfunctional.”

Interspersed throughout the conference are other general sessions:

  • “Getting to Most from People Around You” by Andrea Mazzoccoli, MSN, MBA, PhD, FAAN, senior vice president and chief quality and nursing executive at Bon Secours Health System, Marriottsville, MD
  • “The Battle to Restore Job Satisfaction” by Col. Dean L. Prentice, DHA, MA, BSN, NE-BC, deputy command surgeon, U.S. Air Force, Shaw Air Force Base, SC
  • “How Unconscious Preferences Can Harm Patients Despite Our Good Intentions” by Gloria Johnson Goins, JD, MBA, chief diversity and inclusion officer, Bon Secours Health System, Marriottsville, MD
  • “Sh*ft Happens, But Life Goes On” by Derek Cunard, chief executive people officer, Pinnacle Automotive Hospitality Services, Tampa, FL
  • “The Nurse Leader’s Role in Retention” by Faith Bresnan Roberts, MSN, RN, director of Magnet, professional practice and parish nursing, Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, IL

Add to the mix more than two dozen breakout sessions on subjects as diverse and timely as patient safety, employee scheduling, rounding, readmissions, throughput, professional empowerment, personal mindfulness, and organizational politics, and your conference payout is pretty much guaranteed.

Bonuses of attending include an automatic year’s subscription to the Nursing Management journal, a glimpse at the newest products and services to aid you in your work via the exhibit hall, and a conference location that doubles as one of the premier resorts of Las Vegas. Besides being home to Cirque du Soleil’s The Beatles LOVE show, The Mirage hotel offers numerous world-class restaurant and bar options — an even an artificial volcano that erupts nightly.

Conference sponsor Wolters Kluwer reminds nurse leaders that the U.S. presidential election occurs Nov. 8 and encourages all to cast absentee votes before arriving at the conference. The U.S. Vote Foundation offers information on how to do so in your state.
