Exclusive interview with Joint Commission Resources (JCR) about why and how to obtain JCR certification.

We interviewed Dave Eickemeyer, MBA, Associate Director from The Joint Commission, about the benefits of achieving Joint Commission certification. He also explained how continuing education credits offered in partnership with Lippincott can aid in achieving and/or maintaining certification. Specifically, Joint Commission Resources (JCR), The Joint Commission’s publishing and education affiliate, has teamed up with Lippincott to create eCourses for nurses and other hospital personnel to promote patient safety and compliance and to support Disease-Specific Care certification. 

What benefits does achieving Joint Commission certification offer to an organization?

We have learned from our certification organizations that certification offers many benefits.  The first benefit is quality improvement. Joint Commission standards are a framework to help reduce the variability of care or unexpected outcomes within a program. We conducted a study that showed that the longer a stroke program maintains certification, the better the program meets the standards and performs on the quality measures. One of The Joint Commission’s main goals is to help organizations continuously improve their patient care and quality efforts.

Another benefit is that certification encourages teamwork. When an organization begins its path to certification, we recommend that the organization involves every member of the team in the process. We encourage the program to share its performance measurement results with the entire team, including the leadership. This way, everyone knows what the goals are, what is being tracked, and the progress toward their goals. As a whole, the pursuit of certification fosters efficient teamwork because people are pushing in the same direction and receiving communication about their success.

Once a program is certified, the organization can promote its certification to the community, which is another key benefit of becoming certified. In some areas, such as orthopedics, certification is especially significant because it attracts revenue for the hospital. Organizations want their programs to be the preferred choice in the community for various orthopedic procedures such as hip replacement. Joint Commission certification is a visible sign to the community of that organization’s commitment to quality and safe care and gives the organization a competitive advantage in its market.

How can organizations get help if they have questions while preparing for certification?

We are happy to walk an organization through the certification program step-by-step if they need our assistance. We are available as much as an organization needs us.  We can provide check points and answer any questions they may have during the process. We also explain the concept of performance measurement and our related requirements. Programs pursuing diabetes certification are in particular need of extra assistance because diabetes programs span an entire organization and therefore have a larger scope than other disease-specific care programs.

What resources are available to help an organization prepare for certification?

We have many resources to assist organizations preparing for Joint Commission certification.  We offer complimentary monthly webinars.  Joint Commission Resources (JCR), The Joint Commission’s publishing and education affiliate, provides a number of educational events throughout the year such as seminars and conferences.  At those events, those preparing for certification can meet one on one with  Joint Commission staff, to assess their organization’s readiness for survey, to discuss the application process, or whatever the need. Of course, we also provide help over the phone so we can have conference calls with your entire team. During those calls, we can connect your team with various resources. Finally, JCR has partnered with Lippincott to provide clinical courses in various disease-specific care areas, and these courses offer continuing education credits.  In some cases, these courses meet specific certification requirements. For example, stroke certification requires that staff successfully complete at least 8 continuing education credit hours annually. These courses can help fulfill that requirement. Lippincott’s courses also help with staff development and offer ways to improve employee competency.
