When Hurricane Harvey hit Texas in late August, leaving parts of Houston under water and displacing more than 36,000 residents, local nurses showed up. They tended to the injured and sick, and they brought healing in a time of tragedy.
Houston is now asking nurses — this time, nurses from across the United States and beyond — to show up again. The ANCC’s (American Nurses Credentialing Center) 2017 National Magnet conference, scheduled to take place in Houston October 11-13, 2017, is on.
In a video posted on the conference website, Mike Waterman, president of Visit Houston, makes a plea for nurses who were planning to attend the Magnet conference, but who now may be entertaining second thoughts, to proceed with their original plans. With the help of the nation, the city is already starting to rebuild, Waterman said. But if visitors don’t support the city with their tourism, local businesses will struggle.
“That’s why the entire city is ready to welcome 10,000 nurses into Houston for the ANCC Magnet conference,” he said. “Houston wants you, nurses, to come to our city. We need you to come to this city. We can’t wait to see you in October.”
As usual, ANCC will have a Magnet conference to remember waiting for you.
The entire Magnet conference is a time of inspiration. This year’s event, which will be held at the George R. Brown Convention Center, will feature more than 150 concurrent sessions on a mind-boggling slate of timely, relevant topics. Here’s just a sample of what will be covered: succession planning, patient communication, multidisciplinary collaboration, ethics, self-care, opioid guidelines, Millennials, nurse residencies, emergency department throughput, humor, staff retention, nurse research, reducing falls, and — bet you didn’t see this one coming — Hollywood’s effect on Magnet.
General sessions, too, look to be educational, intriguing, and motivating. Speakers include:
The conference will also feature the Magnet Nurse of the Year Awards. This year’s winners will spark attendees’ professional passion through personal stories of nursing excellence. Newly designated Magnet organizations will also be celebrated.
Speaking of celebrations, a conference welcome party will be held in the heart of Houston at Discovery Green park. The party will include plenty of food, drinks, games, country line dancing, trick ropers, and the 1980s cover band The Spazmatics. Additional networking opportunities will also take place during the conference.
Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation events, too, will be interspersed throughout the event. On tap are wellness breaks, a walking challenge, and a Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation raffle.
The ANCC book store will also be onsite. This year will feature at least 5 separate book signings.
Add to the mix a bustling exhibit hall, poster presentations, a preconference symposium, and the opportunity to earn as many as 24 CNEs, and nurses will be hard-pressed to find a good reason to avoid Houston this October.
As Visit Houston’s president asked nurses in his video message, “Houston is ready. Are you?”
