Nurses' commitment to protecting, promoting, and improving health care for all is well recognized, and it is only fitting that we take one week each year to celebrate the profession and the vital roles nurses play in health care.

Honoring nurses for their hard work and dedication throughout the year, the American Nurses Association (ANA)'s National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6th and ends on May 12th, Florence Nightingale's birthday. Nightingale, who lived from 1820-1910, was known as the founder of professional nursing, especially due to her pioneering work during the Crimean War. Due to her habit of making rounds at night, Nightingale became known as "The Lady with the Lamp." National Nurses Week was first observed in 1954, the 100th anniversary of her mission to Crimea.

National Nurses Week features a host of events across the U.S. to honor nurses for the work they do, and educates the public about nurses’ role in health care. This year's theme is "Nurses: Inspire, Innovate, Influence" — representing just a few tasks nurses are responsible for.

Celebration Campaign

The ANA supports and encourages National Nurses Week recognition programs through the state and district nurses associations, other specialty nursing organizations, educational facilities, and independent health care companies and institutions.

Each of ANA's state nurses associations promote the nursing profession at the state and regional levels. Each conducts celebrations on these dates to recognize the contributions that nurses and nursing make to the community.

During National Nurses Week, celebrations and receptions will be held in hospitals and other healthcare facilities across the country.

ANA's National Nurses Week Toolkit is a useful resource that provides you with additional ways to recognize nurses for their professional skills and abilities. For example, show your gratitude with a branded "Thank You Card." Give every nurse a certificate of appreciation or hang display banners throughout the office. The National Nurses Week toolkit has plenty of ideas to plan a great celebration.

Continuing Education

Nurses are encouraged to sign up for ANA's 2018 National Nursing Week free webinar, "Emerging Technology and Its Impact on Nursing Practice" on May 9 at 1:00 EST. Registration closes on May 8, 2018 at 7:00 PM ET and nurses are encouraged to broadcast the webinar in a group setting at your facility.  If group participants would like to claim free CE, they must register individually prior to the event. They can attend the group broadcast and claim their individual CE after the event by logging into their personal account.

During this one hour exclusive live event, Dan Weberg, PhD, RN, will explore emerging technologies and the impact on nursing practice. Technology in healthcare is continually evolving. Find out what is coming down the pike. Learn what the future of nursing looks like and  what nurses need to know to adapt.

Weberg is a nurse leader and expert in human-centered patient design and simulation and healthcare innovation with extensive clinical experience in the ED, acute in-patient hospital settings, and academia. He has held a variety of leadership roles, including nursing director, clinical faculty director, consultant, and direct care in emergency departments, academic medical centers, large colleges of nursing, and private educational firms. He earned his BSN from Arizona State University, and was the first ever graduate of the PhD in Healthcare Innovation Leadership program at ASU.

Weberg is also faculty at The Ohio State University College of Nursing. He recently authored a book titled Evidence Based Innovation Leadership for Health Professions, which describes the leadership and collaboration skills needed to lead the future of healthcare delivery.
